For years our cell phones have been getting smaller and smaller, but recently we've come full circle. When Apple added the iPhone 6 Plus to their collection, it became even more clear that phablets aren't just another fad. Joining the ranks of the Samsung Galaxy Note series, essentially all of the major players in the phone market have now jumped on the phablet train.

The word phablet is a portmanteau of the words phone and tablet, which is apt. Phablets meet the needs of phone users and tablet users. Blending the accessibility of a phone and the screen real estate of a tablet, phablets can be the best of both worlds just as long as they can still fit in your pocket.

But what do phablets mean for your website?

  • With more screen real estate than ever, developers and designers have a lot more room to work with.
  • Higher device resolutions allow for stunning, high quality images, but you still need to be aware of load times.
  • A typical website is still going to be too large for phablets.
  • A mobile website may be too small for a phablet.

So what's the right size for a website?

Just ask Goldilocks. Not too big, not too small, but just right. Whereas managing both a desktop and mobile site would cost you more time and money (and still might not fit all of your device needs), a single responsive website can adapt to any screen resolution and is perfect for today's multi-device culture.
